What is Delta 8? Benefits and Effects

Delta-8 is a derivative of the Cannabis plant that has gained a significant amount of attention in recent times due to its potential benefits and effects. With the growing popularity of CBD, individuals have become more interested in exploring all cannabis products derived from the Cannabis plant in order to maximize the potential benefits of cannabidiol. The two most well-known derivatives of the Cannabis plant are CBD and THC. CBD is derived from the hemp plant, which is legal, while THC is derived from marijuana, which is illegal. Delta-8, on the other hand, lies in a gray area when it comes to the legality, varying from to state to state even though it is federally legal.

Several studies have been conducted to understand the similarities and differences between CBD and Delta-8. The results of these studies have shown that there are several similarities between the two, but there are also more similarities between Delta-8 and THC. Due to these similarities with THC, Delta-8 has the potential to produce a high, although it is not as potent as THC and is considered less harmful due to its origin from the hemp side of the Cannabis sativa plant.

It is crucial to have a comprehensive understanding of Delta-8, including its potential side effects and usage in pharmaceutical products. This information can help individuals make informed decisions when considering the use of Delta-8.

What is Delta 8?

Delta 8, also known as “D8” or Delta 8 THC, is a cannabinoid found in hemp and cannabis in trace amounts. In fact, there is typically less than 1% delta 8 found in industrial hemp and cannabis. It is very similar to delta 9 from a chemical structure, but the small differences make Delta 8 about 50% less psychoactive compared to its cousin, so it is often preferred by novice or first-time users of cannabis because it is a smoother, milder experience than using medical marijuana or something “from a friend.” Often times, cannabis from a medical or recreational dispensary can contain 25% – 30% THC, and this can be far too potent for those who have a low tolerance to THC or for those who are just becoming familiar with cannabis.

How is Delta 8 Made?

This is a topic that causes a lot of confusion and legal challenges from state to state, so let me inform you why this is so. Let me begin by posing a question – if there are only trace amounts of Delta 8 in a cannabis plant (less than 1%,) then how can there be so many delta 8 products on the shelves of every business from gas stations, to vape and smoke shops, to convenience stores and so on across the country?? That’s a good question, isn’t it? Here is the answer, and some of you might not like the truth, but that is what we do here at Health Synergy, we provide accurate and verifiable information that benefits and educates our customers.

The way delta 8 is produced is through a chemical conversion process known as “Isomerization.” Basically, labs take CBD or Delta 9, and they convert those cannabinoids into delta 8. And there you have it. So, if someone tells you that their delta 8 products are naturally extracted from hemp or cannabis, they are not telling you the truth. They are just a sales person trying to sound knowledgeable to sell you a product, so use discretion when choosing where to purchase a delta 8 product.

So, what is all the controversy about? Unless you are a licensed lab that has professional scientists and technicians to help convert CBD or delta 9 into delta 8, you could risk exposing yourself to delta 8 products that still have harsh residual chemical solvents in them. And herein is the controversy. If an amateur attempts this process without knowing what they are doing, they could be putting themselves in danger because they are mixing potentially volatile chemicals and they can be putting the consumer in danger if they don’t evaporate the chemicals used in the conversion process out of the product. This is why it is critical to ensure that whomever you are purchasing a delta 8 product (or any cannabis derived product) from, has a Certificate of Analysis (COA) that shows a “clean” residual solvents test. With this information in hand, now you know why there is so much confusion and controversy surrounding delta 8, and it is a reason that a number of states have voted to ban it until the industry becomes more regulated.

Is Delta 8 Legal?

Due to a loophole in the 2018 Farm Bill, delta 8 that is derived from hemp does not require a person to have a medical card to purchase it, even if the state does not have medical or recreational marijuana laws. And since it can make a person feel “high” or uplifted, it is quickly becoming a popular choice for people looking to chill out, de-stress and to feel a little elevated during social/recreational events.

What Forms of Delta 8 Are Available to Consumers?

As the demand for delta 8 has grown over the last 2 years, so has the variety of delta 8 products available to consumers. The most popular form factor for delta 8 products is, by far, gummies, followed by delta 8 disposable vape pens or cartridges. If someone prefers inhalation as their method for medicating, then there is also delta 8 flower that can be rolled into a pre-roll or put into a water pipe or smoking apparatus of choice. And finally, the least popular form factor for delta 8 is in a tincture or oil form that is administered under the tongue. Although the least popular, it is actually the best and most versatile way to use it because A) you have the ability to dial in the precise dose, giving you control of the amount you take, and B) you can mix it in a beverage or use as an ingredient when cooking or baking.

Delta 8 Side Effects

Delta-8 is a hybrid product that lies between the CBD and THC, resulting in a range of effects that are influenced by both compounds. It is important to understand the effects of Delta-8 before using it. Here is a list of some common effects that people have reported:

  1. Dry Mouth: One of the most common side effects of Delta-8 is dry mouth. Many people have reported experiencing a dry mouth for several hours after consuming Delta-8 products. It is recommended to drink plenty of water to combat this effect.

  2. Anxiety: While CBD is known for its anti-anxiety properties, Delta-8 can have the opposite effect. The psychoactive properties of Delta-8 may cause some people to feel anxious, especially if they consume high doses. Over time, this can lead to a dependency on Delta-8 to feel calm, which can cause further anxiety.

  3. Positive Drug Test: Delta-8 is considered a drug due to its chemical structure and psychoactive effects. As a result, consuming Delta-8 products can result in a positive drug test. It is important to allow Delta-8 to leave your system before undergoing a medical examination or traveling.

  4. Reddish Eyes: The effects of Delta-8 on the eyes can be similar to those of THC and other drugs, including reddish eyes. This is one of the reasons why Delta-8 and THC are not fully legalized in the United States and are not openly sold in many states.

It is crucial to understand the effects of Delta-8 before consuming it, as its effects can vary from person to person and may have unintended consequences.
