How Long Does Delta 8 Stay in Your System?

Delta 8, also known as “D8” or Delta 8 THC, is a cannabinoid found in hemp and cannabis in very small amounts. In fact, there is typically less than 1% delta 8 detectable in industrial hemp and cannabis. It is very similar to delta 9, but it is about 50% less psychoactive compared to its cousin, so it is often preferred by novice or first-time users of cannabis because it is a smoother, milder experience. The strong demand for delta 8 products is due to the fact that users report similar effects to marijuana, but because it is hemp-derived, it falls into a loophole that allows anyone over the age of 21 to purchase and use the product without the need for a medical marijuana card.

Factors That Can Affect the Duration of Delta 8 Being in Your System

Bodyfat

People who have a higher body fat percentage typically retain delta 8 longer than people who have a lower body fat percentage. Because delta 8 is fat-soluble, it binds to fat molecules, making it take longer to leave the system.

Metabolism

People who have a faster metabolism are able to rid their bodies of delta 8 than people who have a slower metabolism.

Dosage

Typically, the more delta 8 you consume, the more it builds up in your body. The more it builds up in your body, the longer it takes for your body to eliminate it. The potency of the delta 8 can also play a role in duration it stays in your system.

Frequency

Similar to dosage, the more frequently you use delta 8, the higher the concentration becomes in your body, and the more likely you are to have a detectable level in your system. People who use delta 8 daily or weekly, whether they are vaping it, smoking delta 8 flower, or consuming it in a gummy form, it can be detectable in your system 30 days later. People who are first-time or infrequent users can typically eliminate delta 8 from their system within 5-10 days, though everyone is different.

Can Drug Tests Detect Delta 8?

The answer is yes! If any company or sales person selling you a delta 8 product tells you that you won’t fail a drug test by taking it, either they are unaware of the science and answer, or they are flat out lying to you. Most standard employment drug tests are designed to look for THC or any metabolite of THC, and since delta 8 is a metabolite of (Delta 9) THC, it would also show up on a drug test. If you know you have a drug test coming up, it is best to abstain from using any form of delta 8 THC for a minimum of 30 days prior to testing.

How Long Does Delta 8 Stay in Your System?

While people with faster metabolisms tend to flush delta 8 from their systems quicker than those with slower metabolisms, frequency of consumption and amount or potency of each dose may also play a role; however, as a rule of thumb, it takes a minimum of 5 – 10 days of abstinence for about 90% of delta 8 to flush from your system, and then another 5-10 days for any THC metabolites to flush from your system, so you are looking at approximately 20 days of abstinence to ensure any delta 8 you have used to get out of your body. We always suggest erring on the side of caution by abstaining for at least 30 days to make sure you are clean and that no delta 8 will show up in your urine or blood test.

Is Delta 8 Safe?

Generally speaking, delta 8 is safe to use, but we will always stress the importance of ensuring that vendors or suppliers where you purchase your delta 8 products from have third-party lab tests for their products to ensure safety, potency and purity. Since there is less than 1% of delta 8 in hemp plants, the only way to scale delta 8 production to meet the demand of consumers is to convert CBD or other cannabinoids into delta 8 through a process called “isomerization,” and this is where fears for safety come into the picture. Since strong acids and other solvents are typically used during the conversion process, it is so important that it be done by a licensed and professional lab that knows how to remove all the residual solvents before turning it into a finished product. If this is not done properly, the chemicals can find their way into the product and into your system once you ingest it. Since the hemp CBD industry is not regulated yet, the opportunity unqualified people who are just looking to cash in on the popularity of delta 8 to produce unsafe and harmful products exists, and that is why it is also so important to ask for a third-party lab test for your delta 8 product, whether it is a gummy, a tincture or a vape pen.

What are the Benefits of Delta 8?

Although delta 8 is one of the newer and lesser-known cannabinoids to arrive on the cannabis scene, it was first discovered in 1965 by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, and it has been studied by scientists ever since. One of the most underrated but appreciated things about delta 8 is that it is smoother and less potent than its cousin, delta 9 (marijuana,) so people don’t feel the paranoia often associated with marijuana. More potential therapeutic benefits include anti-anxiety, anti-nausea and appetite stimulation. A 1995 study conducted by Raphael Mechoulam and some colleagues showed that delta 8 helped to address symptoms of nausea in children ages 3 – 13 years with different types of cancer of the blood. Delta 8 also possesses anti-inflammatory properties, so it can help to reduce pain perception. It also has neuroprotective properties. As more studies are conducted on the medical benefits of delta 8, the list of uses as a potential therapeutic will grow too.

What are the Risks Associated with Delta 8?

This question goes back to the importance of ensuring that ALL delta 8 products you purchase, regardless of their form factor (i.e. gummies, tinctures, cookies, vape pens and cartridges etc…) come with a legitimate Certificate of Analysis (COA.) To answer the question, delta 8 can have side effects, for example, if someone is exposed to untested delta 8 product, maybe it contains an illegal percentage of THC above the legal permissible limit, then they could get very high which may lead to paranoia. Assuming that one is using a tested and clean delta 8 product, some side effects may include red eyes, a dry mouth, lethargy and sedation. In extremely high doses, it could lead to excessive vomiting. Delta 8 has also been known to lower blood pressure, so if a person already has low blood pressure, using a delta 8 product may decrease their blood pressure below a point where they “crash” and pass out.
