Vaporizer Lung Disease Epidemic

Over the recent months, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has been addressing this mysterious lung disease relating to vaporizer products. According to the CDC, as of October 15, 2019, 1,479 lung injury cases associated with the use of e-cigarette products have been reported to CDC from 49 states (all except Alaska), the District of Columbia, and 2 U.S. territories (Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands). We believe that the cause of this epidemic would stem from illegal counterfeit THC vaporizer cartridges. E-cigarettes use a battery-powered device that heats a liquid to form vapors— or, more specifically, aerosols— that the user can inhale (“vape”). Such machines heat up different flavors, nicotine, cannabis, or other potentially harmful products.

Vaporizer Cartridges In The Hands Of The Youth

The rising popularity of vaping, especially among adolescents, has been dramatic. Roughly 37% of seniors in high school reported vaping in 2018, up from 28% the year before, according to a recent study. In 2017, an estimated 2.1 million middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes; that figure increased to 3.6 million in 2018. Sure, age limits— trading is illegal to sell e-cigarettes to anyone under the age of 21 (in some countries, 18 or 19) is not an obstacle to use by adolescents and young adults. And, according to a 2017 CDC survey, nearly seven million adults 18 or older use e-cigarettes.

Reports Linking The Use Of Vaporizers To Lung Disease

  • Over 200 consumers of e-cigarettes have developed severe lung disease in 22 states among adolescents, and young adults were the majority of cases.
  • Experts believe that the lung disease epidemic is most likely linked to a contaminant to the product and not an infectious agent.
  • Symptoms typically begin gradually, with shortness of breath and/or chest pain before more severe difficulty in breathing led to admission to the hospital.

What We Know

According to the latest data from the CDC, about 76 percent of patients reported using products containing THC, with or without nicotine, while 32 percent reported using only e-cigarettes containing THC. Thirteen percent said they only used products containing nicotine. 70% of patients are male, and 80% are under the age of 35. These products were purchased primarily from “informal sources such as friends, family members, illegal dealers, or off the street.” And while no brand was linked to all cases, 66 percent of patients reported using products under the brand name Dank Vapes. Other most frequently reported brands of patients were Moon Rocks, Off White, and TKO. The research often included self-reported data, and people may not recall what they used or are reluctant to share their vaping or THC habits in detail.

The Issue With Counterfeit Cartridges

In today’s day and age, young kids are becoming curious about the world of THC vape cartridges and are doing anything to get a hold of it. This becomes a health risk because these counterfeit cartridges are unregulated. When a product is non-regulated, the manufacturer can add any kind of substance to the cartridge. They can then sell it without packaging or with a counterfeit label, claiming to be a brand that they are not. Some of the harmful substances that have been found in unregulated vape cartridges are Vitamin E acetate, pesticides, metals, mold, and cutting agents, etc. Not only does one need to worry about what goes in these counterfeit cartridges, but the actual cartridge itself is a concern as well. Many unregulated cartridges give off harsh chemicals when heated up, and inhaling these chemicals are anything but good for your body.

Know What You Are Consuming

You wouldn’t buy a car without first doing research on it, so why would you want to buy a substance that is going into your body without doing the proper research on it? Making sure that your substances are pure, organic, pesticide-free, and lab-tested is vital for your health. One should buy their THC/CBD cartridges from a safe, legal, reputable source. That is the best way to ensure you are in safe hands and what your inhaling is free from any harsh chemicals that are bad for your lungs.
